  • Notes
    • Elisha Ballou was born in then Wrentham, Massachusetts, afterwards Cumberland, R.I. and "settled on the patrimonial estate of 90 acres, deeded to him by his father March 18, 1749. This estate was the easterly section of James Ballou's homestead, and the present writer believes it to have been owned, in his youth, by Joseph and James Jencks - it having been divided into two farms. Elisha was admitted a freeman of Cumberland in 1752, and was a prominent citizen. He seems to have had a military turn of mind and to have held a commission in the British service of those times. We learn this from a brief entry on the town records of 1756. But what his official grade was is not indicated. Probably not above that of captain. When the American Revolution had developed itself, he went zealously into the Continental Army and died in service at Yellow Springs, Pa., in November 1777. His estate was administered on and settled under legal authority, by his son-in-law, Israel Wilkinson of Smithfield. Mrs. Hepzibah, his widow, who was a sister of Rev. Abner Ballou's wife, survived him some 27 years, and died in Mendon, Mass., June 30, 1804, aged 73 years 6 months and 18 days."*

There is a small town called Yellow Spring about 10 miles due east from Altoona, in Blair County, southwestern Pennsylvania. The village is at the intersection of US route 22 (William Penn Highway) and local route 260. It appears on the DeLorme Street Atlas mapping program, version 8. 0. (See printed copy of this map in my Ballou files.)

When I queried the DAR in March of 2004, they had no record of Elisha having been a Revolutionary Patriot. They pointed out that this simply means no one has yet joined the DAR using his service, but that he still could have served in some capacity during the Revolutionary War.

However, there is a record of an Elisha Ballou (or Ballow) who served as a Private in the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment in the Revolutionary War. ** Also, the Providence Co., Rhode Island 1777 Military Census in Cumberland, Rhode Island, shows three Ballou's which could be ours:

      Pg. 1: Ballou, Elisha (SM). 16-50 A
[SM = State Militia; 16-50 A = from 16 to 50 years and able to bear arms]
[This is probably our Elisha, who just squeaked by under the 50 year limit if the census was taken before his 51st birthday in mid-November.]

      Ballou, James 16-50 A
[could be Elisha's son, who was born in 1760 and would have been 17]

      Pg. 2:Ballou, Ariel 60+
[could be Elisha's brother who was born between 1713 and 1715]
