  • Notes
    • We have very little information about Chad Smith, except that he was bo rn about 1750 in Cumberland, Providence, RI and married Joanna Ballou the re about 1776.

He would have been the right age to have fought in the Revolutionary Wa r, but when I queried the DAR in March of 2004, they had no record of h im having been a Revolutionary Patriot. They pointed out that this simp ly means that no one has yet joined the DAR using his service, but th at he still could have served in some capacity during the Revolutionary Wa r. The "Index to Revolutionary War Service Records" * does not list Ch ad Smith as having a Rev. War Service Record.

There is a Chad Smith from Cumberland, R.I. who appears in the Providen ce County, Rhode Island Military Census of 1777, page 8: "Smith, Chad 1 6-50 A." Our Chad would certainly fall into the 16-50 age group.
This could be our man, since the other Chad Smith, son of Rufus, (see belo w) was from Glocester, which is on the far western side of Rhode Island, w hile Cumberland was more than 10 miles east of Glocester. Both townshi ps were in Providence County (at least they are today). That Chad was mar ried in Swansey. Mine was married in Cumberland, R.I.

I cannot find Swansey, Glocester, or Cumberland on todayŁus DeLorme m ap of Rhode Island, but Gloucester appears to have been near present day C hepachet, Cumberland was possibly near present day Cumberland Hill, a nd I can find nothing in Rhode Island with the name of Swansey using any s pelling I can think of. There is a Swansea in Bristol Co., Mass. (near F all River, Mass. and about 4 miles from eastern border of RI, se of Provid ence). They could possibly have been married in this Swansey in Massachus etts. Also, there is a Swanzey, in Cheshire Co., southern New Hampshir e, which seems too far.

For those who wish to take up the chase, it would be helpful to know whe re I have looked already and have not been able to find anything about Ch ad Smith or his family - parents, sibs, etc.

I have checked the vital records from 1620-1870 of the following Massachus etts/Rhode Island border towns: Dedham, Douglas, Dorchester, Dartmouth, F reetown, Mendon, Middleborough, Rehoboth, Rochester, Sutton, Taunton, a nd Wrentham - all of Massachusetts. No record of Chad there.

There was no record of Chad and Joanna's marriage, or Chad's birth or dea th in the following Providence County, Rhode Island towns: Cumberland, Cr anston, Foster, Johnston, Scituate, Burrillville, Smithfield, or Providenc e

No record of Chad in Newport County, R.I. towns of: Portsmouth, Newpor t, Middletown, New Shoreham, Jamestown, Little Compton, and Tiverton.

No record of Chad in Kent County, R.I. towns of: Warwick, East Greenwic h, West Greenwich, and Coventry.

No record of Chad in Bristol County, R.I. towns of: Bristol, Warren and Ba rrington

No record of Chad in Washington County, R.I. towns of: North Kingstown, So uth Kingstown, Exeter, Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton.

There was a Chad Smith b. March 13, 1762 in Glocester, R.I., but his paren ts were Chad (son of Rufus and Mary) of Glocester, and Elizabeth ___ of Sw ansey, who were married at Swansey on Nov. 20, 1783. Something wrong wi th the dates here. [V.R. of R.I.] Our Chad and Joanna were still marri ed at that time and living in Cumberland.

Our Chad Smith also does not appear in "Genealogies of Rhode Island Famil ies, Vol 1 or 2" from R.I. Periodicals, 1983 found in Rochester Public Lib rary, Nov. 5, 2004.

No record of Chad Smith/Smythe or his wife, Joanna, in the "1840 Cens us of Pensioners Revolutionary or Military Services of Rhode Island." - f rom USGenNet.org

      Further Research:

      1. Need to find a state map of Rhode Island to see if can locate Glocest er, Cumberland and Swansey.

      2. Try GenWeb website for Rhode Island. Tax rolls for Chad Smith fami ly in Cumberland from 1770 on.

      3. Try the Federal Census of Cumberland, R.I. for 1790 and on up throu gh 1830 or 1840. He was having children up into the 1790Łus, so was still l iving then; or if not, then look for Joanna (Ballou) Smith as widow and h ead of household.

      4. Need to follow up on the Revolutionary War military records of Chad S mith of Cumberland, RI. Perhaps he or Joanna applied for a pension?
