  • Notes
    • The first we know about Gardiner Austin is from the Federal Census of 18 50 in Thurman, Warren County, NY. Gardner and his wife Elinor, both 24 years old, were born in New York, probably Thurman, and had lived there all their lives. Their first child of the eight they would have, had just been born a month before the census was taken. They were farmers and the land they owned was valued at $500. Next door on one side were Amos and Abigail Bowen, and since there were Bowens living all around them, they probably lived up on what was known as "Bowen Hill."

The New York State Census of 1855 reveals that they were living in a frame house, and by 1855 had three children, John C. was then 4 years old, Nancy C. was 2, and baby William P. was 1 month old. Amos & Abigail Bowen still lived next door.

By 1860, Gardner's land increased in value to $900 and his personal estate was worth $200. Their son Amos Leslie, was 3 months old, and the older three children had started school. The middle initial for little William had changed from "P." in the previous Census to "S" in 1860. The Amos Bowens were no longer living next door, but which family had moved is not clear from the census data. The Austins were now living between John and Wealthy Gallup, who had only their youngest children, Truman and Alpharetta, still living at home, and on the other side was William S. Cameron, a farmer, who lived with his sisters Olive and Lucretia Cameron. Lucretia's occupation was "miller." William, Olive, and Lucretia were all siblings of Eleanor. There were other Camerons also in the neighborhood, and some of them may have been related to Eleanor.

By 1870, Gardner was 44 years old, still farming in Thurman, his land worth $1500, and his personal estate had increased as well to $575. The Austin family had grown by two more children, Douglass, age 7, and Ella, age 5. William G. should have appeared on this census at the age of 2, but for some reason does not. All the children except Ella and William were attending school, but as yet, Amos and Douglas could not write. John C. and Amos were helping on the farm. The Agricultural Product Census of 1870 for Thurman shows that they owned a respectable thriving farm, consisting of more than 60 acres in Thurman. For more details on what they were raising, see section on Amos Leslie Austin.

Ten years later, in 1880, Gardner and Eleanor were 54, still farming. The oldest 3 children had left home.
Amos, 20, the oldest child still at home, was single, a farm laborer, and had attended school within the year. Stephen D. [Douglas], was now 17, Mary E. [Ella], age 15, William G., age 12, and a new child, Agnes L ., had attained the age of 4 - all single, at home, and attending school, except for Agnes. They were living between William & Mary Clark, and Amos & Abigail Bowen. (Amos was the brother of my William S. Bowen w ho married Margaret Dow.) Next to them, the family of M. Warren and Harriett Bowen.

Eleanor died in October of 1880 at the relatively young age of 54, leaving their youngest child, Agnes, motherless at age 8. The next oldest daughter would have been Ella, 15 at the time, and it probably fell to her to raise Agnes. William was 13 and old enough to be helping out on the farm with his older brothers.

By 1892, Gardiner, now 66 years old, was listed as living in Thurman with [or possibly next door to] his son Stephen D. and wife Jennie, and their baby, Percy, with the help of a domestic servant. Gardiner's son Willi am and daughter Agnes were also living with them, or possibly next door. William was a laborer, and Agnes was then working in a factory. They lived near Amos and Abigail Bowen, now in their late 70's.

In 1900, Gardiner was 74 and getting old and had moved in with his son Stephen [who then called himself Douglas], age 38, and Jennie and little grandson Percy, by then 9 years old and attending school. They have moved to Chestertown and Douglas was employed as a day laborer and rented the house.

Per Mrs. Beatrice Cameron, in letter of Aug. 1969 to Frances L. Rist, "Uncle Douglas took care of Grandpa Austin (Gardner] and he had what family records there were, and I don't know what Doctor [referring probably to Douglas' son, Percy Huntley Austin, M.D.] did with them. He lives in Uncle Doug's house."

Three years later, in October of 1903, Gardiner Austin died suddenly of heart disease. A clipping from an unknown newspaper, with date "Oct. 3, 1903" written in pencil, reads:

      Obituary
      Gardiner Austin

Gardiner Austin, aged seventy-seven years, died suddenly Saturday morning at 6:30 o'clock, at the home of his son, Douglas Austin, with whom he resided, in Lewisville. When he arose in the morning he was apparently in his usual good health. He ate a hearty breakfast and was doing some chores in the yard when he suddenly fell over backward and died almost instantly. Dr. C. B. Cunningham was summoned, but nothing, of course, could be done. Coroner Burt, of Lake George, came up later and officially pronounced the cause of death to be heart disease. Mr. Austin was for merly and for many years a resident of Thurman. Four years ago he went to Chestertown to live with his son and came to Warrensburgh with him last winter. Besides this son he is survived by two others, Amos and William, of Thurman, and three daughters, Mrs. Warren Wood, of South Warrensburgh; Mrs. Edward Turner, of Corinth, and Mrs. Benjamin Reynolds, of Garnet. The funeral was held at the house Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the R ev. N. M. Learned officiating. Interment in the Athol cemetery.

Clipping from the Glens Falls Times, Monday Evening, Oct. 5, 1903, p g. 5, col. 3:

      "Warrensburg -

The funeral of the late Gardiner Austin was held at the home of his son this afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. B. M. Learned officiating."

Gardiner Austin is buried in the Pendell Cemetery in Athol, NY, next to his wife, Eleanor Cameron, Lot #39.

Much of the information regarding birth and death dates of the children of Gardiner Austin was obtained by Gary O. Green from the following ref erences:

      1) Mrs. Edward Turner, 6 Summit St., Glens Falls, NY
      2) Mrs. Agnes Austin Reynolds of Glens Falls, NY
      3) 1855 Census, Thurman, Warren Co., NY
      4) Brown, Hakes and Allied Fam., p. 217
      5) Troy and Rensselear Co, NY Vol. 3, p. 88

      Further Research:

      1. Need to search the deed records to see where Gardiner Austin's land was located in Thurman. Did he indeed move the family to a new piece of land between the Censuses of 1850 and 1860?

      2. Try to find Gardiner's father, Joseph in the 1830 and 1840 Censuses f or Thurman, since Gardiner claimed he was born in Thurman in 1826.
