      There was a hill in Salem upon which stood an oak tree that was used as a gallows during the witch trials. Caleb Buffum lived at the foot of this hill. Caleb's descendents said that he assisted in conveying the bodies to the North River, whence they would be taken away in boats by relatives or friends.
