  • Notes
    • "The first of this Reynolds family to appear in what is now Thurman, Warren County, was Caleb^5 and his wife Mary Kenyon. Caleb & Mary were married before 11 Mar1780 when her father's will was written. They apparently left Rhode Island between 1782 and 1789 since Caleb appears in the 1782 RI census in West Greenwich with 1 male ae 0-15, 2 females ae 0-15, 1 male ae 22-49 and 1 female ae 22-49. In West Greenwich land transactions Book 1, p207, in a deed dated 12 Oct1789, land which had belonged to David Kenyon was sold by his son and executor, William Kenyon. Claim was relinquished by Solomon Baker and wife Lydia, David Comes and Wife Deborah, and Sarah Kenyon all of West Greenwich, RI; Dyre Burdick and wife Martha of Mapletown; Caleb Reynolds and wife Mary of Little Hoosick, Albany County. The will of David Kenyon is found in West Greenwich Probate Records Book 2, p 243, dated 11Mar1780 and probated 24Nov1781. In it he names his son William Kenyon and daughters Martha Burdick, Lydia Baker, Mary Reynolds, Deborah and Sarah Kenyon as well as grandson Potter Kenyon. Caleb Renolds(sic) was listed in Stephentown, Albany County, in the 1790 Federal census with a family consisting of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16 and 4 females. By 1800 Caleb Runnels(sic) was in the Town of Thurman, then Washington County. At this time his family included 1 male under 10, 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female over 45. By 1820 the sons Caleb^6 and Stephen ^6 lived on adjacent property in Thurman with their families. In 1824 Caleb ^5 executed a deed in which he sold his 122 acres in Great Lot 13 of Hyde Township to his son Caleb ^6. This property had originally been purchased by Caleb ^5 with Richardson Thurman holding the mortgage. This mortgage was recorded in Washington County mortage records book G p 837 on 13Sep1809. "Caleb ^5 probably d in the 1830's and Mary before 1830 since in the 1830 census there was only 1 Caleb listed in the census. However, there was a male aged 70-80 in the household along with the son, his wife and children. By the time of the 1840 census there is no elderly male in the household. Caleb ^5 and his wife Mary Kenyon are probably buried in the Reynolds Cemetery on South Johnsburg Rd. in the Town of Thurman since just a few feet away from Caleb^6's tombstone are two graves marked only with fieldstones. This cemetery is located only a few hundred feet from the Reynolds homestead which is marked today only by a small cellar hole and a profusion of Lilac bushes." "Deborah and Julia are placed as daughters of Caleb^5 since no record of any other Reynolds family has been found in Thurman in early years and both John W. Kenyon and David Baker married Reynolds females. In the Richards Library in Warrensburg is an old school book, the inside cover of which contains a list of birth and death dates connected to the family of William Kenyon. Deborah, I believe the daughter of Caleb & Mary above, is one of the names in this list. The death record of William Emerson Baker age 55, in Stony Creek Vital Records on 16Jul1885 gives his parents as David Baker and Julia Reynolds. "According to French's Gazetteer, a John Reynolds was the first death in the Town of Thurman. Again, this John is placed as a son of Caleb^5 since there seems to be no other family to which he could belong. This would also be a logical name for a son of Caleb^5. According to a hand written note by Sarah Reynolds Hewitt Potter (#86) her grandfather's sister Martha married Clayton Y. Kenyon, hence the placement of Martha. A long held tradition in the family is that "two brothers went west, one to Texas and the other to the midwest." This could account for 2 of the unnamed sons in the family. In the 1920's, Sheldon Reynolds (#247) worked in a drugstore in Warrensburg. He told me that one day an unknown man came into the store, looked at him and said "You look like a Reynolds." The man went on to say that his name was Reynolds, he was from Texas, and wanted to visit his relatives in this area since his ancestors came from here. Unfortunately Sheldon remembered little else about the incident, not even the man's name, but it does lend credence to the two brothers tradition." - from Reynolds Ancestry, etc. by Joan P. Reynolds.
