  • Notes
    • CHILDHOOD-- Orson's mother died when he was nine months old. (His father would remarry a few years later.) He was raised by John and Cornelia Francis in Batesville, NY until he was of age to go to school. Since Orson was always mechanically inclined, he spent much of his childhood in various garages and blacksmith shops.

ACHIEVEMENTS-- Orson was active in many sports until he was crippled. He played professional basketball for a number for a number of years. Later, he erected, maintained, and supervised Lake George's toboggan slides and skating rinks, where he instructed the youth in the area. Orson was also active in church work, and joined the Oddfellows in 1923. As an Oddfellow, Orson served in most of the offices in the fraternity, including both local and Co levels and one at state level. For his church work, Orson served for years as Lay Leader for the First United Methodist Church and as Lay Delegate to the Annual Conference. He held membership with the United Commercial Travelers and a member of the NY State Firemen's Association. Orson had to his credit several inventions on motors and in electrical engineering.

OCCUPATION-- At the age of 18, in the tenth grade, Orson left school to begin working. He was known locally as a good mechanic by the time that he was 20 years of age and worked for several garages until 1918. He also worked for his father as an apprentice carpenter on occasion. He later worked for D&H Railroad and Standard Oil Company as supervisor of machinery on highway construction. Orson was an instructor and engineer for the Lake George fire department (NY State Conservation Department). It was in this capacity that he lived for several summers on the top of Mt. Prospect as a fire observer. During WW2, Orson drove a tractor-trailer truck to deliver lumber to various war plants. He also took over management of a mill garage (owned by V.L. Johnson in Warrensburg, Warren, NY) and built up a thriving business as a truck-stop with franchises for Mack trucks and Goodyear tires. His last job was at Duell's Oldmobile Agency as manager of the stock room and warehouse. After considerable reorganizing , Orson had the largest stock room in upstate NY with the largest wholesale and retail business. Oldsmobile put his methods into use in all of their shops throughout the country. It was from this job that Orson retired.
    • (Medical):1918-- Orson was injured when working on the Steamer "Horicon" in Lake George. This injury left him unable to do much heavy work for years.

????-- A doctor in Brooklyn found and corrected a spinal condition.

30 Oct 1928-- Orson was seriously injured when his gun accidentially exploded. This left him incapacitated for several months and crippled for the rest of his life with one leg shorter than the other. His granddaughter, Kathy Keith, remembers how cold the injured leg would become when he was outside.

????-- While he was working on the back of a logging truck, a chain snapped and hit Orson in the hand and the chest. The blow to the hand removed one of Orson's fingers, and the blow to the chest is thought to be the reason for the lung illness in 1944.

1944-- A serious illness caused Orson to undergo the removal of one lung.

????-- A serious ulcer was the cause for the removal of half of Orson's stomach.

20 Mar 1967 -- Orson slipped and fell on some ice due to the leg that was injured in 1928. This fall resulted in a broken hip that caused him to move in with his daughter, Maxine Schermerhorn, and her family.
