      Hayward, William, 1648, homestead stood south of Haywards Creek and west of Quincy Avenue.

      Thayer, Richard, 1641, west side of Commerical Street south of Elm Street.

      p. 36: Founders of Mendon, Mass. (Old Braintree is the parent town) included:

      William Hayward, Jr., son of the early settler here.

      Ferdinando Thayer, son of early settler Thomas Thayer, ancestor of the numerous Thayers of Mendon.

      The surname HAYWARD in ancient England was an occupational name, meaning keeper of the common heard of cattle of a town. From the Saxon, hay and ward, a keeper.

      William Hayward was a mariner from Limehouse. Came to New England 1635 on "Ann & Elizabeth" which was bound for St. Christopher in Barbados. In 1641 he settled in Braintree, Mass. He was a land proprietor of Braintree and Charlestown, Mass.
